Newspaper-Pocono Record. East Stroudsburg is one of the main towns in the South Eastern area of the Pocono Mountains region. One of the larger cities, although not as big as Scranton or Wilkes Barre. It was once called Dansbury, to honor founder Daniel Brodhead, but when trains came the name was changed for better identification. Population almost 10,000.
In 1737 Daniel Brodhead, the founder of East Stroudsburg, settled on the site now occupied by The Pocono Hospital Complex. By 1755 the Brodhead settlement was a large frontier community. On December 11, 1755, the home of Daniel Brodhead's family was attacked by 200 Indians. For more than eight hours the family fought for their lives. All of their outbuildings and barns were burned to the in honor of Daniel Brodhead until 1856. The area is popular for its flea markets, Whitewater Rafting, Play Parks, and free scenic waterfalls. |
